The only part of the City of New Orleans located on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, Algiers Point was settled in 1719. Originally developed around the crescent of the river, Algiers Point is the second oldest neighborhood in New Orleans, younger only than the famed French Quarter and has some homes dating to the late 1800s and early 1900s.
As the years went by, the community grew to the existing population of approximately 50,000 residents and spread from Algiers Point to the Lower Coast of the river in the southernmost portion of the parish.
During the late 1960s and early 1970s, there was a building boom in Algiers as many oil company executives relocated to the West Bank. It was at this time that Tall Timbers, Park Timbers, Walnut Bend and Bocage subdivisions were developed.
In the late 1980's, Jack Nicklaus developed the golf course around which the prestigious English Turn subdivision was built.
There is a limited supply of vacant land and new construction homes in Algiers, making resale homes the most popular choice for housing in the area.
